In the three of wands, you see a man in a red robe looking out at the horizon. He holds onto one of the wands while the other two sit beside him on both sides. On the wands, there are new sprouts of greenery. He stands between green and barren land while looking ahead at the sea. The safe and stable land he is on turns. He is able to see the place where the land turns into water. There are multiple boats at sea out in the water, three to be exact, keeping that number of three present.
He has green on his head and on his left side. The left side of the brain is known to speak to logic, while the right side is creative. On the right side, he has a black and yellow patterned slash; on this side is also where the two wands stand. So with the three of wands, you are able to use logic and intuition to really move forward in the direction you need to go. It is like you packed the perfect suitcase for your trip and you left nothing behind, so now you will have a good trip. Not to say this trip will not be without ups and downs and fear, but that you have everything you need to go there. It is safe and supported to go.
Affirmation for three of wands:
“I know I struggle with change. But, the changes upon me are for my growth and expansion.”
I feel the need to point out the difference between the journey of the three of wands and the journey of the fool. The fool has no idea where they are going. The fool is on a completely unknown journey, going into uncharted territory where they cannot see ahead. They have to go on blind faith and really let the universe guide them. The fool is just vibing, and they are not too stressed about the outcome, where they are going, or what is ahead. They are open to whatever will come and have no large feelings about the outcome. The three of the wands can see the journey they are about to embark on. Even though the journey is foreign and new, they at least know a thing or two about the journey they are about to go on. I would also argue the three of wands has a specific goal, and they know the goal they are going to reach. They just are not fully sure about what the journey will look like and what will come up on the journey.
The three of wands is a card that talks about expansion. It talks about expansion in the distance you are about to cover. The card shows you are about to embark on new things and cover new ground, and there are things ahead of you that will cause you to change and transition from who you are now to who you are going to be.
The three of clubs in playing cards speaks to this as well.
The idea is the expansion of self, and with this card, it is about the expansion of self based upon changes on the horizon. When this card comes up in a reading, you are possibly looking at new things and in new directions, and you want to know the outcome. It can also be you asking where you should go, and this card will tell you to go on the path that will lead to a new understanding, a new sense of self, even if you do not fully understand what this newness will be.
The biddy tarot says this card stands for “expansion, foresight, overseas opportunities.”1 It can also stand for “playing small, lack of foresight, unexpected delays.” The biddy tarot says that unexpected delays can come from the person’s unwillingness to move forward and expand in life.
This brings to mind the idea of sacrifice. In Grandma’s Baby Apothecary deck 2, there is a card called the “The Whip”. The Whip tells the tale of ancestors sacrificing so much for us to be here and us learning to sacrifice money, comfort, and time to go where we need to go. Because if we think about what our ancestors sacrificed for us to even walk this earth, we would only want to give up the slither of comfort to expand. That is what the three of wands calls us to do.

Moving and expanding your horizons even when you are afraid
